Pope Francis has officially sanctioned Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples, marking a significant shift in the church’s stance on LGBTQ+ individuals and intending marriages.
The blessings are permissible as long as they don’t occur within regular Church rituals or liturgies, and not simultaneously with a civil union.
This ruling expands on the Pope’s initial endorsement of same-sex couple blessings in October, diverging from the 2021 Vatican decision that prohibited such blessings, citing that God “cannot bless sin.” Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, leading the doctrine department since July 2023, has taken a more lenient approach, contributing to this transformative change.
The new directive presents an opportunity for blessings for same-sex couples and those in irregular situations, emphasizing the discernment of ordained ministers in making these decisions. James Martin, a Jesuit priest backed by Francis, hails the ruling as a substantial step forward in the church’s outreach to same-sex couples, diverging from the 2021 Vatican stance.
This shift aligns with Francis’ ongoing efforts to reshape the church’s attitude toward LGBTQ+ Catholics since his “Who am I to judge?” remark in 2013. His backing for the civil recognition of same-sex couples distinguishes the church from its earlier stern language on gay individuals. While supporting legal acknowledgment of gay couples, the ruling underscores that it doesn’t alter the church’s timeless marriage teachings.
Despite the Vatican’s conservative position on liturgical blessings for same-sex or unmarried couples, the ruling contends that non-liturgical blessings can occur without validating their status. Francis emphasizes a broader understanding of blessings, avoiding a rigid judgmental approach and recognizing the unconditional power of God’s love. However, these progressive changes are expected to face resistance from a vocal majority within the church.
