Billie Eilish has urged people to refrain from discussing her sexuality, alleging that a magazine “outed” her. The singer hinted at her attraction to women in a recent cover interview with the US outlet Variety.

During the Hitmakers Awards, Billie was questioned on camera about whether she had intended to come out. Sarcastically, she thanked Variety for focusing on her personal life rather than more significant matters.

BBC Newsbeat contacted the publisher for comment, redirecting to Billie’s interviews where she discussed her attraction to women.

Despite appearing upbeat during a red carpet-chat, her Instagram post conveyed a less relaxed sentiment.

In the magazine interview from November 13, Billie delves into her experiences as a young woman in the public eye, expressing feelings of intimidation.

When asked about her sexuality at the red carpet event, she stated, “I didn’t realize people didn’t know.” Reflecting on the article, she acknowledged the inadvertent “coming out,” finding excitement in the fact that people now know.

However, she questioned the concept of “coming out” and the expectation for individuals to disclose their sexuality, advocating for the freedom to simply exist.

Billie, alongside her brother Finneas, accepted the award for Film Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For” from Barbie.
