Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has beaten Super Mario Bros. to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 in the United States and Canada.
The Greta Gerwig-directed, Margot Robbie- and Ryan Gosling-starring blockbuster has earned $575.4 million at the box office in North America after only 34 days in release.
It has dethroned the Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $574.3 million total since its release.
In its opening weekend in July, Barbie amassed $162 million in ticket sales. with the film’s global ticket sales standing at $1.29 billion.
Super Mario Bro is still higher than Barbie globally with ticket sales amassing $1.36 billion.
This may be due to the fact that some countries banned Barbie because of their beliefs.
Super Mario Bros. is also the top-earning movie based on a video game series, nearly tripling the $439 million global total.
Super Mario would be a potential contender in the Oscars’ Best Animated Feature category.
