The likely sale of Kylian Mbappé to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal is one that eluded many, even though fans and analysts should have seen it coming.
After Paris Saint-Germain left their captain Mbappé out of their pre-season trip to Japan, the club could be about to get their way following his refusal to extend his contract beyond the summer of 2024.
“Sign a new deal or leave now” was the Ligue 1 champions’ ultimatum and Al Hilal quickly pounced on the opportunity (unlike long-term admirers Real Madrid…so far).
Al Hilal was given permission to speak with Mbappé after the Saudi side offered to pay €300 million (circa $332.4 million) offer. It is thought to be €100 million ($110.8 million) more than PSG’s asking price, making many to wonder why?
Al Hilal’s payment would surpass the current world record transfer, which saw the Parisians pay €222 million (around $246 million) to Barcelona for Neymar.
PSG also holds the second spot in the highest amount paid for a player when they bought Mbappé from Monaco in 2018 for €180 million ($199.4 million).
What Next
What follows next depends largely on Mbappé – what he wants now in his career and Real Madrid. It has been widely reported that Mbappé is holding out for a move to Madrid, who are still hoping to get him on a free transfer next summer.
Will Real Madrid be willing to spend so much for Kylian Mbappé?
