For Real Madrid, they are all out to win the trophy again for a record-extending 15th time, and beating Chelsea in Tuesday’s match would mean that Madrid gets to the semifinals for the 11th time in 13 seasons.
Madrid won at Cadiz 2-0 on Saturday in La Liga in a game in which coach Carlo Ancelotti ensured to keep most of his key players fresh for Chelsea by efficiently rotating the squad.
Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio were on the scoresheet for Madrid at the Bernabeu last week in the first leg, firmly placing the 14-time winners in control of this tie. Chelsea did well to keep the defeat respectable following defender Ben Chilwell’s sending-off.
Chelsea, over the past five matches, has lost four times and scored just once in that loss to Brighton. It would take something quite unexpected to see the Blues come out victorious against Madrid, and that unexpected can as well become reality. Sometimes those things happen, even when the outcome seems to be guaranteed.
