USA, UK, Celebrates Women's History Month 2023: Theme, Why Celebrated.

Women’s History Month celebrated in March, is a day set aside for commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in America and the United Kingdom. The theme for March 2023 Women’s History Month is ‘Celebrating Women Who Tell Stories’.

It is a day set aside to acknowledge the many challenges women face while making crucial contributions to our communities in both private and professional life.

Women’s History Month is also a time to honor the women who have made important sacrifices and contributions to society in both the past and present times.

In the United States, the Lab on Dexter and the Women’s Foundation of Alabama are partnering to host a special event on the first day of Women’s History Month.

The occasion will see many accomplished, empowered, and determined women on the streets of downtown Montgomery for Women’s Masterclass: Access & Allies.

Amongst the program of events for Women’s History Month will be professionally-led talks and engagement opportunities on physical, mental, and professional well-being to better equip women.

In the United Kingdom, the UK Martin Luther King Center’s undergraduate interns and campus partners, will host a variety of events for the campus community to participate in the event which they titled Womxn’s HERStory Month.

The Womxn’s HERStory Month event will kick off at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, with pop-up booths across the campus. The UK community is invited to stop by, take a selfie and pick up cupcakes, cookies, cuties, and Womxn’s HERStory Month swag (buttons, stickers, etc).

The community is also invited to attend the Womxn’s HERStory Month keynote address with Lynae Vanee, a NAACP Image Award nominee, multifaceted poet, producer, and director at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the Gatton Student Center Ballroom AB. In the event, she will speak on the importance of liberating women.

What is the History of Women’s History Month? Who Started It?

Women’s History Month was said to have officially started in 1987 by a school district in Sonoma, California. It was then transformed into a national week-long holiday by former President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Then the holiday took place during the week of March 8.

In 1981, the U.S. Congress made the week a national celebration, and in 1987, the week-long celebration was changed into a month-long celebration.
