In case you are thinking it is some dry pebbles that are inside the tail end of a rattlesnake, and that is what it shakes to make the rattling sound, you are dead wrong.
What is inside the tail of a rattlesnake is…nothing, I mean there is nothing inside the tail end of a rattlesnake’s rattle.
The tail end of a rattlesnake, which is referred to as a rattle, is made of dead skins which form a ring at the end of the tail every time the snake sheds its skin.
When a rattlesnake hatches, it only has one ring of rattle called pre-button or first button, as the snake continues to grow and sheds its skin, it adds more rings to its tail.
How Does The Rattlesnake Make The Rattle Sound
The rattlesnake makes its unique rattle sound by having its tail stand straight and upright, then shaking it, the compressed ring of dead skins rub and grind against each other, giving off the rattle noise from which the snake got its name from.
Below is a video showing the tail of a rattlesnake being cut open, you would discover that the inside is empty.
