Ted Lasso Wins Big at the 2022 Emmys

Again, Ted Lasso makes a shot and scores. The bright Apple TV+ series won several awards at the Monday night Emmy ceremony, including the top honor: best comedy.

Leading the speech was lead actor Jason Sudeikis, who earlier in the evening won best actor in a comedy. He took special care to acknowledge the show’s unsung heroes, including the crew responsible for the COVID-19 procedures and the postproduction team.

“This show is about good and evil, the truth and lies,” Sudeikis said. “But it’s mostly about our response to those things.”

He closed his speech by poking fun at his Ted Lasso colleagues, who were surrounding him onstage and squealing excitedly about the win, and thanking his children. “Otis, Daisy, I love you very much,” he said.

It was Sudeikis’ second appearance on stage. Much to his own surprise, he won the statuette for best lead actor in a comedy earlier in the evening. He said in his folksy speech, “I didn’t think I had a chance.” I guess I’m not overly prepared, but I did take classes at the Second City,” he joked.

The performer thanked his parents, the cast of the show, and the audience. (Some viewers may have noticed that Sudeikis did not address the drama currently engulfing his personal life, including his strained relationship with ex-girlfriend Olivia Wilde.) Sudeikis concluded his speech by saying, “Thank you for the people that watch this show and dig it as much as we dig making it. “I’m shocked and flattered, truly, truly.”

In the television show about a kindhearted American football coach who moves across the ocean to coach a British soccer team, Sudeikis portrays the title role. After co-star Brett Goldstein took home the night’s top honor for best supporting actor in a comedy, the actor took home the show’s second award. In his acceptance speech, Goldstein pledged, “I’m really going to try not to swear,” but then proceeded to drop a sweet F-bomb. The actor, who portrays the stern Roy Kent in the show, continued by thanking everyone who had contributed to “creating this magical thing and letting me be a little part of it.”

Later on in the evening, MJ Delaney was awarded best comedy director. She remarked, as Sudeikis laughed in the audience, “There are so many people I should thank, but it’s really boring when the non-famous people do this. She then quickly recalled two people or things to thank: “Oh! Warner and Apple! Delaney mentioned the producer and streamer of the program. “Now that I think about it, that’s important,”

Ted Lasso has gained popularity with the TV Academy since its debut and has received 20 Emmy nominations this year, including best comedy. In that category, the show had to contend with newcomers like Abbott Elementary and genre-defying prestige hits like Barry.

Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, What We Do in the Shadows, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were additional competition for the program.

Last year’s ceremony saw Ted Lasso emerge as a surprise winner, taking home seven Emmy awards. The TV Academy enthusiastically embraced the show’s upbeat attitude and numerous themes of kindness, viewing it as a balm during the pandemic’s darkest days. The star of the show is Sudeikis, who gives a jovial, mustachioed performance in the role of the motivating and occasionally silly titular team leader. The second season of the program was equally well received, enhancing Ted Lasso’s reputation as the most pleasant program on television.
