According to former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, if the team hopes to develop into a competitive unit under new manager Erik ten Hag, Cristiano Ronaldo must be allowed to leave.

After United’s failure to make the Champions League, the 37-year-old Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus last season, reportedly wants to leave Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was a bench player for Sunday’s Premier League season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

Last season, he scored 24 goals in all competitions, emerging as one of United’s few shining lights in a dreary campaign that saw them finish sixth.

This week, Ten Hag stated that he was excited to work with Ronaldo and was pleased to have a “great striker” like him on the team.

Rooney, United’s all-time leading scorer, continued by expressing his optimism that Ten Hag would be able to build a distinct playing philosophy at his old team.
