Cale Gundy, a pillar of the Oklahoma Sooners collegiate football program and a coach, announced his resignation on Sunday after confessing to reading aloud a term in front of the team’s players that he deemed to be “shameful and painful.”
In 1990, Gundy began a 24-year relationship with the Sooners. During his three seasons as the team’s quarterback, he threw for more than 6,000 yards and scored 35 touchdowns.
Cale Gundy graduated in 1993 and worked as a graduate assistant before taking a position as the quarterbacks and running backs coach at Alabama-Birmingham in 1994.
In 1999, he eventually made a comeback to his alma mater’s football team as a member of the coaching staff under Bob Stoops.
The team won 14 Big 12 titles and the 2000 national championship during their more than 20 years on the Oklahoma coaching staff.
In a lengthy message posted to Twitter, Cale Gundy, 50, announced his resignation and admitted to using an offensive slur.
Given that both his wife and children have degrees from Oklahoma University, Gundy recognized that he had committed almost all of his “adult life” to Oklahoma football. He said that his remark had served as an unwelcome distraction at a “critical moment” for Oklahoma football.
Gundy was a standout athlete at Oklahoma University and set a single-season record for passing yards with 1,916 in 1992 before breaking it the following season with 2,311 yards. Gundy was most recently hired by Brent Venables to coach wide receivers.
Venables acknowledged Gundy’s resignation in a statement and expressed respect to his departing coworker.
L’Damian Washington, who previously worked for the Sooners as an offensive analyst, has been named the temporary wide receivers coach.
