Wouldn’t it be wonderful to just jet off on vacation right now? Most of us are long overdue a break, but not all of us can afford it and that’s where Netflix has come to the rescue. After reporting a drop-off in subscribers, Netflix has been pulling out all of the stops to make sure they’ve got the best viewing on air. There are literally hundreds of wanderlust-inspiring documentaries to choose from, whether your curiosity is for the fierce snow plains of the arctic circle, or for the high-rise buildings of downtown Tokyo. To get your ‘to watch’ list kicked off though, we’ve found three of the most engrossing documentaries on Netflix right now, that you’ll sink into so much you’ll almost feel like you’re there.
Vegas
If you’re after something really immersive, then it doesn’t get much more immersive than watching in 3D. If you’re lucky enough to have a television with 3D capabilities then Vegas is a brilliant documentary to start your wanderlust adventure with. This documentary takes you inside the famous stage shows of Vegas, with cabaret, comedy and everything in between. after that, you’ll zip around to the Bellagio fountain, to watch the incredible technicolour light show. You’ll pass by all of Vegas’ other famous tourist sites and finally into the casinos. It wouldn’t be a documentary about Las Vegas without a look inside some of the famous casinos and Vegas certainly doesn’t disappoint. Although you won’t be picking up any tips on roulette strategy or how to beat the slot machines from this particular documentary, you will get a great idea of the feeling, the buzz, of actually being inside a Vegas casino.
Taco Chronicles
Foodies and travel fanatics often go hand in hand, so a travel show with food at the center is a dream come true for many. Taco Chronicles is exactly that, focusing entirely on one simple dish — tacos. They’re a staple in Mexico of course, but they’ve infiltrated kitchens all over the world thanks to their simplicity to prepare and the way they pack the ultimate flavour punch. Taco Chronicles takes us all the way to Mexico, to see how the most authentic tacos are made. It takes a region by region approach, visiting Mexico City to sample the taco al pastor, before trundling down to Hidalgo to enjoy barbacoa tacos. Before long you’ll be deep into the secrets of cabrito tacos, cochinita pibil and fried fish. It’s compulsive viewing, but be warned, you won’t be able to get to the end of an episode without making yourself a taco or two.
Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands
If you like your adventures a little slower and quieter than the hustle and bustle of Mexico’s streets, then you’ll love this next documentary. Paul Murton, a man with a voice so soothing it shouldn’t be legal, takes you on a tour of some of the most remote Scottish islands. Along the way he meets with people who call these islands home, who share their favourite spots with him. It’s a proper off the beaten path look at some of the most northerly parts of the inhabited world. It’s a truly beautiful documentary from start to finish and it’s a genuinely fascinating one too. Scotland has an incredibly rich history and Murton delivers incredible stories in such a captivating way that you’ll have learn way more than you ever did in history class at the end of just one episode.
