Terry Uttley, Chris Norman, and Alan Silson established the Smokie band in 1964. Until Uttley’s death, he was their bass guitarist.

The musical trio is best known for their singles in the United Kingdom and Australia, the most renowned of which is ‘Living Next Door To Alice.’

Terry was a student at St. Bede’s School in Bradford when the group was first formed under a different name. 

They were known then as The Elizabethans, then Kindness, and eventually Smokie. 

The other founding members left the band for various reasons throughout the years, but Terry remained as the band’s ‘daddy,’ having been a professional musician for almost 30 years. 

Except for a brief period in the 1980s when the band was briefly disbanded, he spent the entire time with Smokie.

He was a key influence on Smokie’s incredible development over the years and remains the group’s figurehead as they continue to tread new ground.

Terry Uttley was also an actor. He has featured in movies like Smokie: Living Next Door to Alice (1976), Smokie: If You Think You Know How to Love Me (1975), and Smokie: Don’t Play Your Rock ‘n’ Roll to Me (1976). 

He died On December 16, 2021, at Ilkley, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
