Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Finalist for WTO Director General

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is up to become the first Nigerian World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General. The two time Nigeria’s finance minister and once the foreign minister and Yoo Myung-hee, from the Republic of Korea, are the only two candidates in the finalist.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala prides herself as a WTO outsider with excellent political and diplomatic experience, while her opponent- Yoo Myung-hee, describes herself as a WTO insider with vast experience in international trade.

The winner will be selected via consensus which will be concluded by the end of October. Sentiments are on the side of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the current US administration has previously criticized the WTO, stating that it is overly sided to China.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a seasoned economist and international development expert. She’s also a board member in Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), and the African Risk Capacity (ARC). She worked as a development economist at World Bank where she attained the position of a Managing Director, Operations (2007-2011).
