Flowers in the color pink. Easter bonnets in pink. Also included are pink Peeps marshmallow candies. So, how about a pink moon?
When the April moon of 2022 gets full this weekend, there will be a “pink moon” glowing in the sky – sort of. Although the moon will not appear pink, it will be given that name because of the pink flowers that bloom in early April.
If you look up into the sky on Saturday, April 16, the first full moon of spring will appear to be just like any other full moon, with a yellow or golden-orange glow as it begins to rise and a whitish tint as it rises higher in the sky.
The next full moon in May will be even more spectacular because it will be accompanied by a total lunar eclipse. (See below for more information.)
When can you view the full moon in April?
The near-full April moon (98 percent full) will rise in the eastern sky at 6:29 p.m. in the New York City area. According to TimeAndDate.com, the completely full moon will rise at 7:42 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, in the east-southeastern sky, as Passover begins on Friday, April 15.
On Saturday, the moon will reach its fullest phase at 2:55 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
The moon will rise in the east-southeastern sky at 8:57 p.m. on Easter Sunday, which will be late this year due to the full moon cycle, and will be 99 percent full.
The big morning moon will be setting in the west-southwestern sky at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, 6:47 a.m. Sunday, and 7:18 a.m. Monday if you want to see it.
