Following boxer Ryan Garcia’s positive test for the performance-enhancing substance ostarine prior to his unexpected victory over Devin Haney, Conor McGregor shared his perspective on the matter via social media.
Expressing strong opinions, McGregor advocated for Garcia to face a lifetime ban for his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Although Garcia’s urine samples were collected before his fight last month, the results were only disclosed later, revealing the presence of ostarine on the day before and the day of the match, which Garcia won through a majority decision.
In response to the test outcomes, Garcia took to social media, posting a video on X to defend himself.
Despite Garcia’s commendable 25-1 professional boxing record, he has yet to secure a world title. Moreover, in last month’s fight, he was ineligible to contend for the world super lightweight title due to failing to meet the 140-pound weight requirement, registering at 143.2 pounds during the weigh-in.
In a statement provided to ESPN, Haney reacted to Garcia’s positive tests, expressing disappointment over his use of performance-enhancing drugs and asserting that Garcia owes an apology to the fans.
“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,” Haney said. “…Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke.
We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. You don’t play boxing. This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up! People die in this sport. This isn’t a joking matter.”
The potential repercussions for Garcia remain uncertain at this stage, but McGregor insists that Garcia should be barred from competing in the WBC.
