Baltimore Ravens have agreed to trade for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Diontae Johnson to help maintain the no. 1 NFL offense, along with quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Johnson would undergo a physical examination next, according to the team’s announcement.
The Ravens will send a fifth-round pick to the Panthers for Johnson and Carolina’s sixth-round selection, Carolina announced.
Johnson had been a huge deal in the market with two teams seriously interested in landing the wide receiver. However, it was the second time Johnson has been traded this year.
The Panthers acquired Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers before they sold him to the Ravens. Diontae had already resigned that he would retire with the Panthers, but when he could no longer deal with the losses, he was open to moving on.
Baltimore can pair Johnson with Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman to add another technique to the offense.
The Ravens have used three or more wide receivers on 163 plays, which is the second-fewest in the NFL.
Jackson has been enjoying a good season with the Ravens. He has thrown for 2,099 yards, which ranks No. 5 in the NFL this season. His 9.7 yards per attempt when targeting a wide receiver is third-best behind Sam Darnold and Jared Goff.
So with Johnson, the Ravens would have options. He can help Jackson with throws near the sidelines. They are leaving no stone unturned.
Since entering the NFL in 2019, Johnson has totaled 242 catches on passes outside the numbers, the sixth-most in the league over that span.
To remain at the top, you have to keep building, and the Ravens have taken the bull by the horns this season.
