Jean-Philippe Mateta helped his club Crystal Palace to achieve a first win in the Premier League this season after scoring a decisive goal against Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace’s boss, Oliver Glasner, was under pressure before the match after losing three consecutive games, and the inability to secure a win in all their matches this season saw his side win in a good performance against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham.
Jean-Philippe Mateta helped score the goal in the 31st minute after he converted an assist from Eberechi Eze into a shot from close range. Brennan Johnson, who plays for Tottenham, almost avenged the goal, but the shot hit the post, became a rebound, and was cleared by Trevor Chalobah.
Crystal Palace created more chances, with a goal from Eze being ruled out for offside reasons and Adam Wharton denied by Guglielmo Vicario, Tottenham’s goalkeeper. The team secured a morale boost despite missing other goals, moving up to 17th, while Tottenham dropped to eight with two defeats in their last three matches.
Son Heung-Min, who captains Tottenham, did not feature in the game, with Vicario agreeing that his team did not add enough energy and managed only to get three shots on target throughout the game, resulting in a low xG of 0.72.
Eze created the assist that Mateta converted into a goal, and he currently has the second-highest xG on the team. Coach Glasner labeled the victory as a starting point for moving forward.
