Head coach Dave Canales was asked if he would decide to bench quarterback Bryce Young and starting Andy Dalton after Sunday’s defeat to the Chargers, and he replied, “Bryce is our quarterback.”
As situations proceeded, the head coach seemed to have changed his position. The Panthers are now benching Young to replace him with Dalton, starting with this week’s match against the Raiders, as said by Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, has not performed beyond expectations in his first two starts.
Young has thrown three interceptions and made only 55.4 percent of his passes for 245 yards. His passer rating is 44.1, and he is averaging just 4.4 yards per attempt.
He went 2-14 as a starter last season, making 59.8 percent of his throws for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He also did not make Week 3 last year, when Dalton made his only start in a game that the players played against the Seahawks.
Dalton made 58.6 percent of his throws for 361 yards in his 36 and two touchdowns in three games that he featured in the least season.
Dalton also recorded a 66.7 percent completion rate in 2022, when he threw for 2,871 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Saints. He also holds an 83-78-2 career record.
