Free COVID 19 Tests Available Again As XEC Variant Spreads

By the end of September, Americans will be allowed to order free COVID-19 test kits to be delivered to their homes for the main purpose of curbing the spread of the new XEC variant. This strain is a hybrid of two previously discovered Omicron subvariants: KS.1.1 and KP.3.3.

The U.S. government has reopened the COVIDTests.gov website, and each household can order up to four nasal swab tests at no cost. The U.S. Postal Service will handle the distribution so that people can receive them promptly.

This initiative was pushed forward after the Biden administration allocated $600 million to produce new at-home COVID-19 test kits. The funding will support 12 manufacturers across seven states to ensure that there will be a steady supply of tests to meet the anticipated demand during the fall and winter seasons.

The tests are designed to detect current virus strains, including the XEC variant, which has been causing a rise in cases. The XEC variant, which was first found in Germany, has since spread to more than 10 countries, including those in Europe and abroad. In addition to the free tests, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended an updated COVID-19 vaccine for everyone aged six months and older. This new vaccine also targets the latest strains and will boost immunity ahead of the colder months.
