An athlete unfortunately drowned at a swimming event at a CrossFit competition in Texas on Thursday, as announced by the organization.
The death happened on the first day of the CrossFit Games, which was being held in Fort Worth through Sunday. CrossFit revealed that all events that were supposed to be held for the rest of the day had been placed on hold following the tragedy.
CrossFit CEO Don Faul discussed his grievous pain over the athlete’s death during a press statement that he issued, though the athlete’s name is still yet to be revealed.
The incident happened on Thursday morning at Marine Creek Lake. Authorities said that a call was put through to the Fort Worth Fire Department around 8 a.m. local time about a CrossFit Games participant who went missing in the water.
Dive teams and a drone in the search were deployed by emergency responders, which led to the recovery of the athlete’s body an hour after the dive team began their search.
The body was subsequently transferred to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner, while the plan was to reveal the name of the alert after the family had been notified, police confirmed.
Faul again said that CrossFit is cooperating with officials in the investigation that has been conducted.
The swimming event that was being live-streamed across different platforms was abruptly cut short after the incident occurred, as reported by Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA. Livestreams of the event have been taken down on CrossFit Games’ platforms.
Faul added that safety personnel were on hand at the venue of the event.
