The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a recall of over 2,000 pounds of imported frozen ready-to-eat halal chicken products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall affects products from Al Safa Halal US, an importer based in Mississauga, Ontario.
The recalled items, produced in Canada and imported to the United States in June 2024, include two specific products:
- Al Safa Halal Charcoal Grilled Chicken Seekh Kebab in 12.1-oz packages
- Al Safa Halal Fully Cooked Chicken Chapli Kebab in 14.11-oz packages
Both products are marked with a November 30, 2025 expiration date and bear the Canadian establishment number “866”.
FSIS discovered the potential contamination during routine product testing. No illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to listeriosis, a severe foodborne illness. This infection is particularly dangerous for certain groups, including the elderly, individuals with compromised immune systems, expectant mothers, and infants.
Those affected may experience a range of symptoms, such as elevated body temperature, muscular pain, severe headaches, neck stiffness, and digestive disturbances. In some cases, the infection can progress to more serious complications, especially in high-risk individuals.
FSIS has urged consumers who have purchased these products not to consume them. Instead, they should either return the items to the place of purchase or dispose of them safely.
The agency is conducting recall effectiveness checks to ensure that recalling companies notify their customers about the recall and take necessary actions to remove the product from the market.
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854 or email MPHotline@usda.gov. or use the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System to report issues with meat, poultry, or egg products.
