The former White House press secretary under President Trump drew attention with an unusual target at First Lady Jill Biden.
Sanders first recounted taking her young son to the White House for “Bring Your Kid to Work Day” during her tenure. She then quipped, “Much like Jill now drags Joe to ‘Bring Your Husband to Work Day’,” eliciting applause from the audience. This remark tapped into the ongoing Republican criticisms about President Biden’s age and fitness for office.
The Arkansas governor’s speech covered a range of topics, from her experiences in the Trump administration to current policy issues. She highlighted the role of Republican governors in addressing border security, crime, and education – areas where she claimed the Biden administration has fallen short.
During her speech, Sarah Huckabee Sanders also alluded to a recent incident at a Trump rally, framing it as divine intervention.
“Not even an assassin’s bullet could stop him. God almighty intervened because America is one nation under God,” she declared, referencing what she described as an attempt on Trump’s life in Pennsylvania.
The convention speech, which received praise from both sides of the political aisle for its personal touch, also included criticisms of what Sanders perceives as the left’s approach to women’s empowerment. She accused the current administration of being unable to define womanhood, contrasting this with her view of Trump as a president who “believes in empowering every American.”
“The Left doesn’t care about empowering women. Biden and [Vice President Kamala] Harris can’t tell you what a woman is. But we have a president who believes in empowering every American and that our country is worth fighting for.”
The convention continues with more high-profile speakers scheduled, including Sen. J.D. Vance who has been named as Donald Trump’s running mate.
