Six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan is set to join the Sacramento Kings through a sign-and-trade agreement. The deal, reported on the opening night of the California Classic, marks DeRozan’s return to his home state of California after successful stints with the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, and most recently, the Chicago Bulls.
According to reports from ESPN, the Kings will acquire DeRozan on a three-year, $74 million contract, with $59 million guaranteed in the first two years. In exchange, the Kings are sending veteran forward Harrison Barnes to the San Antonio Spurs, along with an unprotected 2031 draft pick swap. The Chicago Bulls will receive guard Chris Duarte, two second-round picks, and cash considerations from the Kings.
DeMar DeRozan, 34, brings a wealth of experience and scoring prowess to Sacramento. Last season with the Bulls, he averaged 24 points per game while shooting 48% from the field. He also demonstrated his all-around game with 5.3 assists and 1.1 steals per contest. The Compton native’s arrival bolsters an already potent Kings offense, joining forces with All-Stars De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, as well as rising star Keegan Murray.
For the Kings, this move is a push to build on their recent success and establish themselves as serious contenders in the Western Conference. DeMar DeRozan’s scoring ability and veteran leadership could be the missing pieces to elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
The departing Harrison Barnes leaves Sacramento after five solid seasons, during which he played a crucial role in the Kings’ return to the postseason. He averaged 14.7 points on efficient shooting splits and made significant contributions both on and off the court.
