Jessica Alba takes on the role of Parker Calvo, a Special Forces commando, in Netflix’s new action thriller “Trigger Warning,” set to premiere today, June 21. Directed by Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya in her English-language debut, the film offers a familiar but engaging narrative of corruption and vengeance.
The story follows Parker as she returns to her hometown of Creation, New Mexico, following her father’s mysterious death. As she investigates, she uncovers a web of corruption involving stolen military weapons and local politics. Alba’s character, known for her knife-wielding skills, must navigate these dangers while uncovering the truth about her father’s demise.
While “Trigger Warning” doesn’t break new ground in the genre, it maintains viewer engagement through its pacing and polished production. As one reviewer notes, “It’s an entertaining, pacey action melodrama that should do well for Netflix.” The supporting cast, including Mark Webber as the local sheriff and Anthony Michael Hall as a scheming senator, adds depth to the narrative.
Director Surya, known for her acclaimed film “Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts,” brings a competent hand to the project, though some critics feel the film lacks the personal touch of her previous work. The screenplay, credited to John Brancato, Josh Olson, and Haley Gross, offers “a viable if familiar pileup of perilous complications.”
“Trigger Warning” also marks a return to action-heavy roles for the actress. While the film may not redefine the genre, it promises to be an entertaining addition to Netflix’s action thriller lineup.
