Veteran actor Steve Buscemi joined the list of victims of unprovoked knife stabbing attacks and punching on Manhattan streets in New York City last week. According to Buscemi’s publicist on Sunday, the incident, which occurred around noon on Wednesday, left the 66-year-old with injuries to his left eye.
According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault on 3rd Avenue in the Kips Bay neighborhood. Upon arrival, they found Buscemi with bruising, swelling, and bleeding around his left eye. The actor, known for his roles in films like “Fargo” and TV shows such as “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” was treated at a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.
In a statement, Steve Buscemi’s publicist expressed sadness over the unprovoked attack, calling it “another victim of a random act of violence in the city.” The publicist added that Buscemi appreciates the well-wishes from supporters but remains deeply troubled by the growing incidents of violence on New York’s streets.
The assault on Steve Buscemi is the latest in a trend of random attacks on pedestrians in the city. Just last month, fellow actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who starred alongside Buscemi in “Boardwalk Empire,” was also assaulted while walking through Central Park. Police have made arrests in some of these cases, but the random nature of the attacks has left many New Yorkers on edge.
Social media platforms have been flooded with accounts of people being assaulted while going about their daily routines, from walking dogs to commuting to work or school. Luckily, some of these assailants were caught on camera.
As the investigation into Buscemi’s assault continues, the NYPD has released a description of the suspect, who was reportedly wearing a dark baseball cap, blue t-shirt, black pants, and white sneakers. No arrests have been made yet, but authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
