Burnley have officially relegated from the Premier League back to the Championship, following their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Despite a promising start with Jacob Bruun Larsen’s 25th-minute goal, their hopes dwindled when Pedro Porro equalized just minutes later.
Burnley dominated the second half, but couldn’t break through Tottenham’s defense. Late in the second half, Micky van de Ven scored the winning goal for Spurs, sealing Burnley’s fate.
With the loss, Burnley joins Sheffield United back in the Championship after one season in the Premier League.
Burnley’s journey in the top flight sadly comes to an end with just one game remaining and a five-point gap behind Nottingham Forest, who sit just above the relegation zone.
Vincent Kompany, who led Burnley to the Championship title last season, has struggled in the Premier League, winning just five league matches. His side only secured two wins in their last 19 games.
“Today the Premier League is over but tomorrow we start day one of doing everything we can to get back to the Premier League,” Kompany said.
“The game has gone a bit like others have gone for us this season. We created chances but the one where we missed the final pass.
“I’m not here sulking and feeling sorry for us but if you take every game, every season as a learning experience, this is step we need to get into our game.”
