Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC has been promoted to the third tier of the English Soccer League, after their promotion to League two last season.
The club owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will play in League One next season, two tiers below the Premier League.
The promotional news came after they beat Forest Green 6-0 on Saturday.
It is the first time Wrexham has achieved back-to-back promotions in its 159-year history. It last played in the third tier of English soccer during the 2004-05 season.
Wrexham is second in League Two with two games to go. The top three teams are automatically promoted to League One, and the fourth-place club MK Dons can no longer finish ahead of Wrexham.
In November 2020, Reynolds and McElhenney reached an agreement to buy Wrexham.
Nine victories in their last 15 league games, with just three defeats, saw them power into the top three this season and reach League One for the first time since 2005.
League Two leaders Stockport County, four points clear, also secured promotion on Saturday with the title still up for grabs.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was full of praise for his team, saying: “I’m immensely proud of the lads today because, when it mattered most, we’ve put in our two best performances of the season.
“It’s never easy with Forest Green’s low block making it difficult but it was important we showed that we’d learned from when we played them last time, and I think some of our football was of a very high standard.
“I came into the game not expecting other results to go our way – I think that’s the best way to approach it.
“It wasn’t until about two minutes to go when my son George, who’s our analyst, gave me the rundown and obviously then you know it’s a done deal. I’m just so pleased.
