On Saturday night, a car crashed into the security gate surrounding the White House, resulting in the driver’s death, according to officials.
The incident is currently being treated as a traffic collision, as reported by the D.C. Police Department.
Anthony Gugliemi, spokesperson for the Secret Service, assured that there were no threats or safety concerns following the incident. The Secret Service released a preliminary statement providing basic details about the crash, which they are actively investigating.
According to the Secret Service, the vehicle was traveling at high speed when it collided with a gate along the outer perimeter of the White House complex, occurring just before 10:30 p.m. ET. Upon arrival, officers attempted to assist the male driver found inside the car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
“There was no threat to the White House,” the Secret Service’s statement read. “The fatal crash portion of this will be turned over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department Crash Investigation Unit and the Secret Service investigation continues.”
As of now, the driver has not been identified. President Biden was reported to be in Delaware over the weekend and was not present in Washington, D.C. at the time of the crash, as per the Associated Press.
