The family of Whitey Herzog, the iconic Baseball Hall of Famer renowned for his “Whiteyball” style of play, announced his passing at the age of 92 through the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
Herzog led the St. Louis Cardinals to three World Series appearances, clinching the championship in 1982 against the Milwaukee Brewers. During his tenure from 1980 to 1990, he amassed 822 victories with the Redbirds, placing him third in franchise history for most wins.
Recognized as the 1985 National League Manager of the Year, Herzog concluded his managerial career with an overall record of 1,281-1,125, having also served with the Texas Rangers, California Angels in an interim capacity, and the Kansas City Royals, where he garnered the Major League Manager of the Year accolade in 1982.
Offering his condolences, MLB commissioner Robert Manfred Jr. praised Herzog’s extensive contributions to the sport, highlighting his impact on both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals.
Herzog earned his place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010, honored by the Veterans Committee for his illustrious career.
Survived by his wife Mary Lou of 71 years, their three children, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, Herzog leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of baseball.
