Pop icon Britney Spears has finalized a settlement agreement with her estranged father Jamie Spears, over two years after the termination of the controversial conservatorship that had controlled her life and finances for 13 years.
The terms of the settlement were not disclosed by attorneys for Britney and Jamie. However, the former’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart celebrated that the 41-year-old singer’s “wish for freedom is now truly complete” and she will “no longer need to attend or be involved with court in this matter.”
Also to CNN, Jamie’s attorney Alex Weingarten stated “Jamie is thrilled that this is all over” and wants “the best for Britney, nothing less.”
The settlement closes the drawn-out legal battles that persisted even after the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021 following Britney Spears’ explosive testimony alleging abusive conduct. Her father had served as her conservator for most of the 13-year arrangement, controlling her estate and personal affairs.
Since regaining her freedoms, Spears has spoken openly about feeling deprived of basic civil liberties under the complex legal arrangement. Her memoir “The Woman In Me” recounted the conservatorship making her feel “like a shadow of myself” whose “womanhood” was stripped away.
While Jamie Spears maintained he worked diligently to protect his daughter, the conservatorship saga damaged his relationship with Britney.
