Expressing his dismay, Frenkie de Jong shared his sentiments on Barcelona’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSG on Wednesday.
The Dutch midfielder emphasized the team’s efforts to advance but pointed out that the pivotal moment came with Ronald Araujo’s red card, which tilted the tie in PSG’s favor.
“We scored to go 1-0 up and we already have an important advantage but in Europe when you play with ten men against a team like PSG, you know you’re going to suffer. We tried but in the end we couldn’t do it anymore,” he said.
“I had the feeling that Barcola’s touch was long and the ball was going towards our goalkeeper. I haven’t seen the play but that’s the feeling I had.
“We have tried, we have fought but it was not possible. It is a strong blow because we were convinced that we could progress. There is no choice but to get up and try again next year.”
With this victory, PSG advances to face Dortmund in the semi-finals. The Bundesliga outfit staged a comeback to eliminate Atletico and secure a 5-4 aggregate victory.
