HBO’s hit fantasy series House of the Dragon will be returning for its second season in June, according to Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief executive officer, J.B. Perrette.
The show, which is a prequel to Game of Thrones, is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, and chronicles the history and the conflicts of the Targaryen dynasty in fictional Westeros.
According to Variety, Perrette made the announcement during an interview at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom conference on Monday.
He had previously praised the show’s creative team, led by showrunner Ryan Condal, and the cast, which includes Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, and Eve Best, among others. He also teased that the second season will feature more dragons, more battles, and more surprises for the fans.
House of the Dragon is one of the most popular and acclaimed shows on HBO, as well as one of the most anticipated shows of 2024. The series has been a ratings success, attracting millions of viewers and subscribers to HBO’s streaming platform, despite facing major skepticism before its release.
The second season will continue the story of the Dance of the Dragons, a civil war that erupted between two rival branches of the Targaryen family over the succession to the Iron Throne.
House of the Dragon is not the only Game of Thrones spin-off in the works. HBO Max is also developing Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series based on Martin’s novellas about the adventures of a hedge knight and his squire, who are the ancestors of some of the main characters in Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere on HBO Max in June. As of the time of writing, no specific date has been provided.
