Five people, believed to be students of William V.S. Tubman University, tragically lost their lives in a car accident along the Harper Highway, including a patient being transported in an ambulance.
The incident took place on Monday, March 25, 2024, around noon, when a motorbike carrying the victims collided with an ambulance associated with Partners in Health, a non-profit organization supporting the county’s health initiatives.
The victims, consisting of three males and two females, have been identified as Philip Williams, Standly Natt, Godfrey Dweh, Marie Dennis, and an unnamed patient. Despite being rushed to J.J. Dossen Hospital, they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Philip Williams and Standly Natt succumbed to their injuries instantly upon impact.
Eyewitnesses reported that the ambulance, en route to Harper with a patient from Pleebo, had experienced severe mechanical issues, leading to the collision with the motorbike. Following the accident, the ambulance driver fled the scene amidst the growing crowd’s agitation.
Four of the deceased were students at William V.S. Tubman University, ranging from freshmen to graduating seniors, as revealed by an eyewitness.
The eyewitness described the situation as regrettable and concerning, alleging that the ambulance driver was speeding before the collision.
This incident adds to a series of tragic accidents in Maryland County. In May last year, a fatal collision involving a motorcycle and a Land Cruiser Pickup claimed the lives of a 63-year-old pastor and a local journalist.
Similarly, in October 2021, two individuals died, and another was critically injured in a collision between two commercial motorbikes along the Pedebo-Plolo road.
Further, in June 2021, a Field Supervisor lost his life in a crash involving two motorcycles in central Pleebo. Another fatal accident occurred in August 2020, resulting in the deaths of two individuals after their motorcycles collided with a refrigerated truck.
