Johnny Wilson, former wide receiver for Florida State University, has been selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, claiming the No. 185 overall pick. This makes him the eighth Seminole drafted thus far in this year’s draft, amidst a highly competitive pool of wide receiver prospects, with Wilson being the 28th receiver chosen.
Initially starting his college career at Arizona State, Wilson had limited playing time before making the move to Tallahassee, where he emerged as Jordan Travis’ primary target. Over two seasons wearing garnet and gold, Wilson accumulated 84 receptions for 1514 yards and 7 touchdowns. Despite encountering several injuries during the 2023 season, causing him to miss several games, Wilson showcased his potential, coming close to reaching 100 catches over his collegiate career.
While some scouts suggest that Wilson might find greater success as a tight end in the NFL, his impressive athletic testing results, including a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at nearly 6’7″ and a 4.11-second shuttle run, indicate his ability to excel as an outside receiver in the professional league. However, concerns have been raised about his consistency in catching the ball, with a career drop rate of 12.8% (per PFF).
Wilson’s draft projections varied widely, with Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus ranking him within his top 90 prospects, while other scouts anticipated him being selected in the fifth or sixth round. Ultimately, Wilson’s size and potential captured the attention of the Eagles, leading to his selection in the draft.
