Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay received Narcan from police last month when they discovered him at his Carmel, Indiana home, breathing irregularly with bluish skin, as authorities reported.
Upon police arrival at Irsay’s estate around 4:30 a.m. on December 8, the 64-year-old was unconscious. The incident report, released by Carmel police on Wednesday, revealed that Irsay had fallen and was initially found unresponsive in his bathroom. Staff members moved him to his bed, where police observed him struggling to breathe.
An officer administered Narcan, an opioid overdose antidote, to which Irsay responded slightly, as stated in the report. Subsequently, an automated external defibrillator (AED) was attached, and paramedics took over lifesaving efforts.
It remains uncertain whether the incident is connected to the “severe respiratory illness” the Colts announced Irsay was undergoing treatment for this month. Responding to inquiries, the Colts released a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing Irsay’s ongoing recovery and requesting privacy for him and his family.
In November, Irsay candidly discussed his battles with addiction on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” The Indianapolis Star reported that he shared his struggles with alcoholism and pain pill addiction, stemming from numerous operations related to his powerlifting career, having been to rehab 15 times.
Despite the challenges, the Colts finished the regular season with a 9-8 record, narrowly missing the playoffs.
