Onana, Reece Named In 2023 Disappointing XI

Mason Mount, Reece James, and a host of other players have been named in the 2023 Premier League disappointing XI. Some of them are on the list due to endless injury problems.

  1. Andre Onana, Manchester United

Although the Cameroonian goalie displayed moments of brilliance into the season. He has struggled to settle in Manchester United.

He shone for Inter Milan on their way to last season’s Champions League final and earned a £43.8 million move to Old Trafford.

But since his move, Onana has made more fatal mistakes than brilliant moments and Manchester United have had to endure their worst season.

  1. Reece James, Chelsea

The English defender has been laid off no fewer than 7 times due to injury. The 24-year-old has endured a miserable 12 months because he simply hasn’t been able to overcome his injuries.

His latest being a string injury is expected to keep him out till March 2024.

  1. Eric Dier, Tottenham

The 29-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances under new manager Ange Postecoglou, starting just once. He started 31 Premier League games last season, but the new manager is not willing to work with him, so he may likely seek a transfer next year.

  1. Joško Gvardiol, Manchester City

Manchester City signed Gvardiol for £77.6 m from RB Leipzig. But, Gvardiol has struggled to adjust to the pace and intensity of the Premier League. Guardiola has decided to play him as a left-back, not his usual position and he has struggled to find form.

  1. Marc Cucurella, Chelsea

Cucurella joined Chelsea for £60m and he has struggled with his form. He is now on his fourth manager at Stamford Bridge in under 18 months and Mauricio Pochettino is also doubting his abilities.

In a recent defeat at Manchester United, Cucurella was played out of position at right-back and was substituted at half-time.

  1. Enzo Fernández, Chelsea

Fernandez became the most expensive player in Premier League history when he joined Chelsea from Benfica for £105m in January. But he has had a tough time settling in, dealing with injuries and playing time.

  1. Kalvin Phillips, Manchester City

The Manchester City midfielder started four games last season and ended up with winners’ medals in the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. It’s worse this season, as he has started only one game in all competitions.

But, Phillips has retained his England place and made six appearances for manager Gareth Southgate’s team in 2023. This means that he has made more appearances for the country than his club.

With the January transfer window set to open, Guardiola has made it clear that Phillips can leave City if he can find a new club.

  1. Mason Mount, Manchester United

Mount was Manchester United’s first summer signing, arriving at Old Trafford in a £55m transfer from Chelsea, but he has done nothing right.

The 24-year-old has managed just eight appearances in all competitions for United. He also has to deal with a pelvic injury. As a consequence of his fitness problems and loss of form, Mount has been absent from the England squad for the whole of 2023.

  1. Antony, Manchester United

This season, Antony has registered no goals and no assists for Manchester United and he was signed in an £85m transfer from Ajax in August 2022.

He has only managed two goals and two assists throughout 2023.

  1. Marcus Rashford, Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has struggled in the second half of 2023. He scored 14 goals in his first 16 games of 2023 and helped Manchester United end a six-year trophy drought by scoring in the 2-0 Carabao Cup final win against Newcastle.

But the 26-year-old has lost his starting place at United. Since the Carabao Cup win, Rashford has only scored her goals in 40 appearances.

  1. Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea

The Ukraine winger spent most of January encouraging a move to Arsenal, but Chelsea came in late with an £88m offer that was too much for Shakhtar Donetsk to refuse. But has he proven his true value? Maybe in recent games.
