A 77-year-old man shot and killed two environmental protesters/climate change activists over a roadblock on a highway in Chame, west of Panama City, Wednesday.

The aged man was identified as Kenneth Franklin Darlington Salas.

According to witnesses, the environment protesters had blocked the highway, stopping motorists from moving.

Kenneth came down from his car and proceeded to clear the road by taking away some of the tires, and wood logs.

One of the climate activists then shouted at him saying “Are you going to kill someone?”.

He replied saying “You want to be the first?” Before shooting one of the protesters holding a flag, and then another person that came to confront him.

The elderly man proceeded to clear the road before the police arrived to arrest him.

The two dead protesters were identified as Abdiel Diaz, a teacher and union activist, and Ivan Mendoza.

The incident emanated from protests that arose when Canada-based First Quantum Minerals were awarded a contract on October 20, to operate Central America’s biggest open-pit copper mine for a minimum period of 20 years.
