Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, and Olena Zelenska, his wife, spent this morning paying tribute to the Ukrainians who have died as a result of Russian aggression during the past nine years.
The horrific events over the border have overshadowed a low-key Independence Day.
Ukraine’s leader nevertheless saw the apparent death of Yevgeny Prigozhin as a chance to make a joke, saying: “When Ukraine appealed to the countries of the world regarding planes, we did not mean this.”
It is safe to predict that there will not be many sobs shed for the alleged demise of a guy who was responsible for some of this war’s most terrible combat.
There is also a sobering reality that Moscow’s continued invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory will be little affected by the recent unrest in Russia.
