England and Nigeria squared off in the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Monday in Brisbane, Australia.
The outcome of the game was finally decided by a penalty shootout, in which England scored four crucial goals while Nigeria only managed two.
The most memorable event of the evening, as if the shootout weren’t dramatic enough, occurred late in the game when England star Lauren James was sent off for stepping on Michelle Alozie of Nigeria. As the game approached extra time, England had just 10 players available due to her departure.
Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie made several outstanding saves in goal to keep the Super Falcons in the match, but England was able to come out on top and move on to the quarterfinals.
