The Former Women’s World Cup winners, USA women team has crashed out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup competition after losing to Sweden who are ranked third by FIFA.
There was hell to play for both teams before who were not getting any second chance. One of them would go home and the other would progress to the quarter-finals.
The United States had more chances in the first half. Their best chance was when the captain, Lindsey Horan struck the post. They also had some beautiful play, but Swedish goalkeeper Zecira Musovic, who sat on the bench in her club saw her opportunity and took it.
In the second half, Misovic saved balls from Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan. Sweden did not have any shot on target till the 85th minute when substitute Sofia Jakobsson danced into the area, only to shoot straight at keeper Alyssa Naeher.
At the end of the match, the Swedish goalkeeper made a total of 11 saves. In a crazy penalty shootout, both teams started well, scoring two gas with their balls in the far corner.
Megan Rapinoe struck the fourth kick for the US over the bar after Sweden’s Nathalie Bjorn had also blasted over.
Naeher saved Rebecka Blomqvist’s fourth shot for the Swedes and Sophia Smith was supposed to put the game to rest for her team, but she fired the shot well over the bar.
After Naeher and Magdalena Eriksson converted their spot-kicks, Kelley Ohara sent her shot pinging off the right post, allowing Hurtig to step up and send the champions out of the tournament.
Naeher punched the ball out, but it was not enough to keep the champions on the fight as goal line technology went in favor of the Swedes.
This is the earliest the United States has left the competition as their worse performance since the start of the competition is finishing in third place.
