According to an autopsy report from the Los Angeles County medical examiner, Lisa Marie Presley’s cause of death was “sequelae of small bowel obstruction”.
Osmosis defines sequelae as a medical term used to refer to any complication or condition or consequence that results from a pre-existing illness, injury, or other trauma to the body. Some sequelae may also arise from a past medical intervention, such as a vaccine, a specific treatment, or surgery.
Lisa Marie was 54 years old when she died on January 12. She was the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.
What Is A Small Bowel Obstruction, Causes
A small bowel obstruction is a blockage of the small intestine. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can be caused by colon cancer, certain medications, adhesions in the abdomen that form after surgery, and conditions that can cause inflamed intestines, such as Crohn’s disease.
According to the medical examiner’s report, Presley’s small bowel obstruction was caused by “adhesions that developed during bariatric surgery years ago. This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery.”
The examiner said Presley also had a history of overmedicating in which, forgetful that she had taken her prescription medication, she would repeat her doses.
The toxicology report showed she had “therapeutic levels” of oxycodone and other medicine in her blood that were not considered contributing factors.

According to Dr. Angelique Campen, an emergency room physician at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, the chances of developing and dying from small bowel obstruction are little. And if you happen to have it, it cannot go undetected due to the painful abdominal pain which should prompt a medical visit.
The autopsy also noted that Presley had complained of abdominal pain on the morning of her death.
Priscilla (Lisa) Marie Presley was found unresponsive in her home after having a cardiac arrest (heart attack) and would die in the hospital.
A memorial service was held for her later in January at Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, which has since been turned into a museum, and is also where Elvis Presley is buried. Lisa Marie Presley was laid to rest beside her son, Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020.
She was survived by her daughters, actress Riley Keough, and 14-year-old twins Finley and Harper Lockwood.
