After Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina led by Messi, popular Islamic Cleric, Mufti Menk, has been in the talks after he made a tweet on the ongoing WorldCup in Qatar, bordering on haram.

Mufti Menk made a post on Twitter saying, “Things just got a bit #Messi. Well done #SaudiArabia. WorldCup vs #Argentina”.

However, some of his followers were shocked that he is okay with watching football and felt it was not in line with who he is.

While others felt watching football is haram in Islam because of what the game now includes; such as the mode of dressing of footballers on the pitch as well as gambling, which is mostly associated with soccer.

Another user faulted Qatar for spending billions of dollars on structures and others, for the purpose of hosting the 2022 World Cup, while millions of Muslims are impoverished and dying of hunger.

Mufti Menk, real name Ismail ibn Musa Menk is a 49 years old Zimbabwean Islamic scholar and the Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe’s Muslim community. He is popularly known for his preaching on Islam which borders on peace and living good lives.

Many of his teachings are shared on social media. On Twitter, he has a very large follower base of 9.5 million people.
