According to a representative from his party, Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan was wounded in the foot at a rally on Thursday. His party said the incident was an attempted assassination.
Asad Umar, a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claimed that when the shooter started firing, a bullet struck Khan in the foot.
The former Pakistani cricket captain was transported from the rally location outside of Gujranwala to Lahore, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive away, for medical attention.
According to Senator Fawad Chaudhry, a prominent PTI leader and Khan’s former information minister, Khan is having surgery and is in a stable condition.
According to Chaudhry, six more people were hurt and are still receiving treatment.
A man accused of firing shots at the gathering has been apprehended, according to the police. According to authorities, the male suspect was apprehended carrying a 9mm pistol and two empty magazines.
According to Faisal Javed, a prominent PTI leader and close associate of Khan who suffered a head injury in the attack, at least one person was murdered in the incident. The victim’s identity has not been made public.
In support of Khan, demonstrations took place all over Pakistan, especially in Peshawar and the nation’s capital, Islamabad. On the seventh day of a national rally tour, Khan demanded that the elections be moved up from August of next year.
Khan was attacked on Thursday, and Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister who took office after Khan’s defeat in a no-confidence vote in the parliament in April, denounced the incident on Twitter.
Khan was recommended to be disqualified from holding political office for five years on October 21 by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), a recommendation that is anticipated to escalate political tensions in the nation.
