During his solo anchoring, Chevy Chase introduced the segment with a joke on the vanished Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa. In the beginning, Weekend Update frequently featured commercial parodies and other TV broadcasting customs.
The show’s centerpiece is now its parody of the news. Dick Ebersol, a former producer, recently told Chris Wallace in an interview from his Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace series on HBO Max that Weekend Update was crucial to keeping viewers interested late into the show.
