Salah wins for Liverpool

Liverpool ended Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at Anfield thanks to a second-half Mohamed Salah strike.

Foden thought he had opened the scoring for the visitors in the 53rd minute, but VAR intervened to judge that Erling Haaland had fouled Fabinho in the build-up and chalked the goal off.

Liverpool has been struggling for form in the Premier League this season, beginning the afternoon in 12th place and well off the pace of the leaders.

The Reds suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Arsenal last week to damage their hopes of making ground, but did issue a response in the Champions League by hammering Rangers 7-1 on the road.

City has been dominant in the Premier League, dropping only four points in their opening nine matches, including their 4-0 hammering of Southampton last time out.

In the 50th minute, Ederson produced a brilliant stop to deny Salah. Firmino released the forward through on goal with only the City keeper to beat. He tried to slot a left-footed strike past Ederson, but he got the smallest of touches with his hand to push it past the post.

In the 55th minute, Foden’s goal was disallowed as Haaland fouled Fabinho in the build-up, pulling the shirt of the Brazilian.

The Norwegian then latched on to a through ball from De Bruyne and knocked the ball away from Alisson. Foden pounced on the rebound to blast a strike past Gomez on the line.

Allison denied Haaland again in the 64th minute, Gundogan threaded the ball through to Haaland in the box and he took a touch to fire at goal on his left foot.

In the 76th minute, Salah converted his one-on-one opportunity this time, when Alisson created the goal after claiming a poor cross from De Bruyne from a free-kick. He launched a kick downfield and Salah was left alone with Cancelo.

Salah turned Cancelo out of his boots and was left through on goal against Ederson. This time he clipped his effort over the onrushing City keeper and into the back of the net, giving Liverpool the lead.

Liverpool inflict the first defeat on Manchester City in the Premier League campaign, securing a 1-0 win at Anfield.

Liverpool are at home again in their next Premier League outing against West Ham United on Wednesday. City will be looking to bounce back from their first loss when they face Brighton at home next Saturday.
