According to police commissioner Michael Sack, a shooting at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of an adolescent student and an adult.

He claimed that the shooter was shot by police when they found him after a gunfight. Later, Sack reported, he was declared dead. The gunman was reportedly in police custody at one point.

The victims and the shooter were not immediately identified by the authorities, but Sack said at a news conference that the victims were a woman who was declared dead at the hospital and a teenage girl who was killed there. He claimed that the gunman was a man who appeared to be in his early 20s.

The commissioner reported that eight people were sent to a local hospital. The shooting was reported on social media.

Sack claimed that when police did come, they spoke with pupils who described the assailant as having “a long gun.”

Sack declined to reveal how the shooter entered the school, but claimed that the doors were closed, which gave responding law enforcement time to find the perpetrator.

After reporting the active shooter on Twitter, the St. Louis Police Metropolitan Police Department wrote, “At this moment, the scene is secure and there is no current danger,” roughly 45 minutes later.
