Napoli on fire as they pummel Ajax 6-1 to record their brightest start in the Champions League

Napoli are the group leaders of Group A, as they have opened their Champions League campaign with two straight victories.

Luciano Spalletti’s side are the top-scoring team in the competition so far this season and arrive in Amsterdam full of confidence having won all of their last six matches.

Ajax returned to Champions League action on the back of a three-game winless run which started with their narrow 2-1 defeat away to Liverpool last month.

The hosts looked like they had it in their pocket when Bergwijn played a one-two with Taylor to burst into the box and cut the ball back for his team-mate. Taylor’s shot is blocked and the ball landed for Kudus, who managed to bundle home from very close range, putting Ajax in front

Nine minutes later, Napoli equalised as Olivera had the time to pick out Raspadori with a cross towards the far post. The winger steered his header from the right of the six-yard box back across goal into the bottom-left corner.

Another goal for the visitors, as Di Lorenzo doesn’t miss with his header this time, nodding Kvaratskhelia’s cross into the top-left corner of the net! Napoli has come from behind to lead.

The visitors are on a goal spree as Anguissa wasted no time in finding Zielinski who fired a powerful shot, taking Ajax’s entire defense out of the equation in the process, and putting the ball in the back of the net. At halftime, Napoli led by three goals to one.

Two minutes into the second half, Ajax’s mistake cost them another goal as Pasveer played a lax pass straight to Anguissa. The Cameroonian pushed it on immediately to Raspadori, who slotted past the despairing goalkeeper for his second goal of the game.

Napoli were not holding back as Kvaratskhelia finally got his name on the scoresheet after a beautiful perfoance, playing a one-two with Raspadori to bustle into the box and finish right-footed past Pasveer. A few Ajax fans are already making for the exits.

In the 81st minute, Ndombele found Simeone with a sumptuous first-time flick, and the substitute fired high into the center of the net. There is no coming back from that defeat.

Napoli’s third consecutive Champions League victory keeps them top of Group A, three points clear of Liverpool who’ve beaten Rangers 2-0.
