A 93rd minute Scott McTominay’s goal proved to be the difference between Manchester United and Omonia at Old Trafford, despite having 34 shots on target.
For the second week in a row, the Red Devils only just squeezed past their Cypriot opposition in the Europa League.
The goal came from Manchester United’s 34th shot which just highlights the performance of Omonia’s stand-in goalkeeper Francis Uzoho who had the game of his career between the sticks for the visitors.
McTominay came on to replace Casemiro in the 80th minute after Brazillian gave a beautiful display creating numerous opportunities for the home side and having a shot hit the post. The highlight of Casemiro’s performance was a fantastic lofted ball for Rashford to run onto but he fluffed his lines in front of the goal.
Francis Uzoho, who is not even the number-one goalkeeper for his side was on fire. He dealt brilliantly with everything that was thrown at him and was unbelievably unlucky to finish the game on the losing side.
He have twelve saves, including two double saves in the first half to keep his team in the game. Had it not been for his heroics, United could have scored five or six goals in the first half alone.
But Scott came on in the 80th minute to turn things around. He frustrated the home fans with speculative, hopeless long shots but he stayed cool when it mattered most. A good finish from the Scotsman to ultimately earn his side an extremely important win in the context of their Europa League group.
Marcus Rashford just couldn’t convert anything, as Uzoho did everything to stop him. He had 10 shots throughout the 90 minutes which equalled 1.5 xG!
It was a very quiet night for David De Gea, United’s goalkeeper. Had one save to make and completed all 18 passes he attempted.
McTominay’s winner was a very important one as it leaves Man United just three points behind Real Sociedad rather than an overwhelming five points, with just two games remaining.
The result does mean Omonia are out of the Europa League, but they can still make it into the Conference League. Man United will host Sheriff Tiraspol in their next European game while Omonia face group leaders Sociedad.
