What will an increase in the speed of rotation of the earth cause? Recently we have seemingly seen shorter days and shorter nights. Some days are so fast that we can not explain.
Scientists have announced that the speed of the rotation of the earth has increased, and it is much faster than usual. At a time, the earth was recorded to have completed a day, completing a full spin within its own axis, at 1.59 milliseconds less than the normal 24 hours period.
Well, you might be thinking that is very insignificant and should have no effect in shortening the length of days or making time run faster. It’s not unusual to look at the calendar and wonder how the time (minutes, days, months, and years) runs so fast and why.
But in the long run, it does have some effect and it is also linked to earthquakes and various natural disasters impacting the earth
During the week, someone tweeted, as people voiced their worries after the reports.
“SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT THE EARTH IS SPINNING FASTER AND DAYS ARE GOING BY FASTER THAN USUAL BUT NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT?!!!!!”
But scientists have played it down, stating that it is a normal process in their opinion and according to research. Sometimes the speed of the earth’s rotation fluctuates, but it does not mean that there is a great cause for panic.
Stephen Merkowitz, a scientist and project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center addressed the report, saying:
“It is a completely normal thing. There’s nothing magical or special about this. It’s not such an extreme data point that all the scientists are going to wake up and go, what’s going on?”
Judah Levine, a physicist in the Time and Frequency Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology also stated that there was no cause for concern, as the earth might seem like it is moving faster and people would say we are dealing with shorter days, but the earth has actually been experiencing longer days over the course of several centuries.
Most renowned scientists have agreed that although the rotation of the earth might be at 1.59 milliseconds, there is nothing to worry about.
Sometimes, the earth can rotate faster depending on how it redistributed its mass, or due to extreme or harsh climate conditions.
Influence from the moon or other planets also pact the speed of rotation of the earth, but overall, there is nothing to worry about.
