Atletico Madrid entered game week three sitting third in Champions League Group B. They had taken three points from their opening two fixtures having scored two goals and conceded three.
Club Brugge came into the game in fine form. They’re top of Champions League Group B having taken six points from their opening two games.
Brugge started pressing early into the match, with Atletico playing counterattacks when they get the chance.
Diego Simeon’s side made their first substitution in the 35th minute, replacing Marcos Llorente with Correa.
The next minute, the hosts were in front, when Jutgla carried the ball dangerously into the area before squaring it across goal for Sowah, who gleefully tapped it in to make it 1-0 to Brugge.
Brugge was looking to become the third Belgian side to win three consecutive Champions League games, after RSC Anderlecht in 2000 and KAA Gent in 2015.
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw the Spanish giants create more opportunities but could not put any ball into the back of the net.
In the 62nd minute, Jutgla got his own goal, when Buchanan held the ball well in the Atletico penalty area before laying off the oncoming Jutgla, who finished superbly to make it 2-0 to the hosts.
In the 76th minute, Griezmann’s penalty kick crashes against the crossbar to deny the visitors a step closer to leveling up.
At the end of 90 minutes, Club Brugge secured a sensational 2-0 win against Atletico Madrid to keep their European dream alive.
The Belgian giants would travel to the Civitas Metropolitano next in the Champions League to take on Atletico on their home turf. That game will take place on October 12th.
